They are lying in the snow. Not in spite of the cold, but in it. As if the snow were a sofa, a given, the only thing that had ever existed. One is standing, perhaps keeping watch, or simply looking elsewhere. The others are asleep.

We walked for hours that day to reach them.

We wore three layers, mittens, shoes made for “many degrees below zero” or “many meters above sea level.”

They had their fur and their indifference. Some animals remind you that you’re ill-equipped for your own planet.
