In Plato’s allegory of the cave, men chained up watch shadows cast on a wall. They take these shadows for reality. Only the one who manages to get out discovers the light, then turns back to look at the others. I was far ahead. I turned around.

And I saw them, all twelve of them, dark silhouettes facing that mountain wall, which the light made seem almost unreal. They were watching. They couldn’t yet know what lay on the other side. We think we leave the cave by reading, by reflecting. But the real way out—the one that changes something in the body, not just in the mind—comes through the physical experience of the world.

The cold, the effort, the silence, the vastness. Things you can’t read about. Things you can’t delegate. In Lapland, no one leaves the cave through thought. You leave it on foot.

I thought of Plato. I took out my camera.

Lapland, winter expedition, 2026.
