These black streaks in the ice are not dirt.

They are volcanic ash that fell during ancient eruptions, trapped between snowfalls, and compressed over centuries until they became ice. Each dark layer is an eruption. Each blue layer is a year of accumulated snow.

This block drifting on the Vatnajökull lake is an archive. It contains more history than any book. It is melting.

Jökulsárlón, Iceland, spring 2026.
