On November 21, 1973, a U.S. Navy DC-3 made an emergency landing here. Ice had built up on the wings, weighing it down beyond what was bearable. The crew survived. The plane stayed behind.
Fifty years later, in the rain, amid this black ash plain with no end in sight, the wreck is still there. No sign, no explanation.
Just the metal, the wind, and the question Iceland asks of those who pass through it: What remains when everything else is gone?
